Charpy V Notch or Impact test is a test method used to determine the toughness of a material. The Charpy V-notch impact test is performed by machining ‘V’ notch in the centre of the standard test specimen and the test specimen is fractured at a test temperature by a swinging pendulum of a known potential energy.
The test specimen absorbs portion of the energy to fracture and this absorbed energy is indicated by the machine.

When required, the fractured specimens lateral expansion and fracture face assessment is performed. AS 1544, AS 2205.7, ASTM A370, ASTM E23, ASME IX, QW 170, EN 875 are some of the common test standards.
